Smiling in Spring: Ten steps to feeling instantly happier…

Today is the 1st of March and thus Spring is fast approaching. Whilst it is a dark rainy morning on the South Coast, it’s not going to get me down as I’m going to be using these ten top tips on how to feel instantly happier!

  1. Get some fresh air

It’s proven that just 5 minutes outside can increase your mood! So despite the rain, I am going to face the outside world. Sitting in all day makes you feel unwell and unproductive. Even if you’re sat inside working, a change of scenery is good for you.
  2. Exercise

Not only does exercise makes you feel better for actually pushing yourself to do something that’s good for you, exercise realises endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that are released when you work out that makes you feel happy – it’s science!
  3. Make a goal and work towards it

Think of something that you would like to achieve in the near, or far, future and write it down. Writing something down makes you consider it as real in your mind and therefore is not something to be forgotten or ignored. Once you have decided on your goal then do something that brings you a little bit closer, even if it’s just something that takes you five minutes, it doesn’t matter, a step closer is a step closer. This will make you feel achieved and therefore instantly happier.
  4. Declutter your surroundings

Once you have tidied up or organised yourself you will feel more in control and ready to be productive. Feeling out of control can make you stressed, therefore adding a little bit of organisation to your life can make you feel a lot more relaxed and happy.
  5. Do something that is out of your comfort zone.

Stepping outside of your comfort zone can be difficult, scary even. However, stepping outside of your comfort creates an abundance of opportunities and you will get a sense of achievement for dealing with a situation that you’re not comfortable with.
  6. Be social

Humans need interaction. If you are reading this I am going to assume that you are human (feel free to prove me wrong), and therefore you will feel better if you are sociable. Even if it’s just phoning someone up for a 5 minute phone call, it will make you feel not alone and instantly lift your mood.
  7. Accept the things you can’t change.

Holding onto bitter thoughts about things that are out of your control is counterproductive. Once you let these things go you will feel liberated and free from stressors holding you back. Liberate yourself in March by letting go of the things you can’t change.
  8. Drink water.

Staying hydrated is imperative for your health and your mood. Being dehydrated lowers your mood and gives you headaches that make you feel grungy and low. Try and always carry a bottle of water around with you.
  9. Feeding your body the right fuel
